Reflection on the book “Fishers of Men”
by Angel Bangaysiso
We all know that God loves us and because of His great love for us, He gave His only son, Jesus for our salvation. In this book, Fishers of Men, it tells about how Jesus came in this world to proclaim the good news coming from God. And before he goes back to heaven, he blessed the apostles to continue the work in proclaiming the good news to many people in different places. And right now, in our generation, we are also invited to become fishers of men. But before we do this, we need to prepare ourselves especially the spiritual aspect of our being. We need to be equip – deepen our relationship with God, learn more about him and imitate His way of life.
However, in a world that we have right now, we are living in a world of confusion. So many things are happening around us: climate change, wars, killings here and there, corruption, poverty, abuse of drugs, power and authority, divorce, and more. The way of life right now is also different. People nowadays are living in a “me, myself and I” kind of life. They focus more on their selves rather than thinking about the welfare of others. With all these things happening, we could reflect, is God still in their lives? Do they still recognize who God is? Do they still know how to pray?
We are called to become fishers of men. We are called to proclaim the good news especially to those who do not know, forgot and thirsty for God. But of course, human as we are, we might think that we are not that worthy to become fishers of men because of our sinfulness. But God loves us, and in our daily lives, we realized how much He loved us and He is confident that we can be witnesses of His love and mercy through our life experiences. The world needs people like us who lives in ordinarily but is able to share it extraordinarily because we have God in our lives. All we need to do is to trust Him, surrender everything to Him and He will use us powerfully.
This book is our reminder and affirmation that we are called to become the fishers of men of this generation. The world needs people like us to continue the work that God has entrusted to his apostles thousands of year before. We need to bring people back to Him. God loves us so much and He wants us to experience the best life ever with Him. He is faithful and true in our lives and He has a very beautiful promise that is in-store for us. All He needs is our Yes, and truly our life will never be the same again.
