A reflection on the book Following Christ by Mjoy De Guzman CFC FFL Fulltime Worker. Following Christ is a book written by our Servant General, Frank Padilla.
This book talks about Following Christ to the call of discipleship. For me the definition of following Christ is being a servant of God. While we are here on earth, we ourselves are called Servant of God. And being a servant of the Lord requires pure heart, obedient heart and a loving and humble heart. We as Christian’s follower are created to become a Servant of Christ. Jesus called his followers as “Servants”. If we are indeed striving to be a follower of Christ, we must become a Servant, and being servant requires 3 things:
1. Pure Heart
For us to be a servant we need to have a kind of purity of heart as what Christ Jesus had. When he was called to live a life as man here on earth, he simply shows to us how pure his heart is, and it is by means of God being the center of his heart. He is always focused on God alone. He always seek the Lord and always want his life to be Holy. He is very devoted to have a relationship with God. He always find time to talk to God and pray to deepen his relationship with his father.
2. Obedient Heart
As servants, we need to be obedient as how Christ did. Sometimes we don’t understand what God wants to happen in our life and what his plan for us. But when we always recognize the will of the Lord we become a courageous and obedient servant. Even unto his death Christ is still obedient to his father by trusting on his plans for him. He had entrusted his life to God by giving his life to us, to save us on our sins and because out of his love to everyone, he sacrifice his own life. For us to have the salvation. He became obedient to the will of God.
3. A loving and humble heart
becoming a servant of Christ requires loving and a humble heart. We need to keep our hearts to be humble at all times. Because in humbleness you will see love. In Ephesians 4:2 it says “With all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love. “ It only means we as Servants we are a peacemaker. We must care about our relationship with others. Sometimes those people are hard those who are hard to love, but when we need to know and we must always choose what is right thing to do, and it is to love one another.
Being a follower of Christ is not easy. We can face fears, doubts, insecurities, pride and unworthiness. But if we surrender all of it to God and trust in the will of the Lord and have those three things, we can respond to the call becoming a servant as what God wanted us to be. When we pursue doing the service of God, it will be the greatest work in the world!
