FROM THE SERVANT GENERAL
THE NEW EVANGELIZATION

Today’s gospel: Luke 9:1-6
Our Church is missionary. Jesus’ mission was not just for the Twelve but for all of us even today. We “are sent” and so we too are apostles. The need is even greater today, as the world is being overwhelmed by a tsunami of evil. Thus there is the call to the New Evangelization. With such an important call is the equipping and empowerment.
How was it with the Twelve? Jesus “summoned the Twelve and gave them power and authority over all demons and to cure diseases” (v.1). That is the very authority of Jesus and the very power of the Holy Spirit! These are to be used effectively against all demons. These are to be used effectively to cure diseases, to put right what is not of God.
And so the Twelve were given their marching orders. Jesus “sent them to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick.” (v.2). To proclaim is to evangelize. To heal is to work at total human liberation. Evangelization and work with the poor–these even today are the very crucial works of the Church. They are our work as well.
Now if we do God’s work, then God will provide what we need. We need not worry and rely on our own resources. “Take nothing for the journey, neither walking stick, nor sack, nor food, nor money, and let no one take a second tunic.” (v.3). Lack of human resources should not hold us back. The less we have, the more God can provide.
Today, in response to the New Evangelization, we can once again do really massive work with LCSC. We take LCSC to all parishes and all publics and all places. If a particular parish or public or town does not accept you, simply move on to the next. “And as for those who do not welcome you, when you leave that town, shake the dust from your feet in testimony against them.” (v.5). Do not waste your time and energy arguing or convincing, because there will be more receptive people elsewhere. Later (much later) you can go back to that unwelcoming place and try again.
So, apostles of God, it is time to move on. There is much work to be done. There is a harvest already prepared by God. Just do your part and God will do the rest. You have been called and have been sent. Go. “Then they set out and went from village to village proclaiming the good news and curing diseases everywhere.” (v.6).
