BEING THE FAMILY OF GOD

July 21, 2015

Today’s gospel:  Matthew 12:46-50

We say we are the children of God and the brethren of Jesus. Are we indeed? What makes us members of the family of God? Jesus himself gives the requirement. “Who is my mother? Who are my brothers?” (v.48b). They are not necessarily his blood relatives. Who they are are those who are his disciples. “For whoever does the will of my heavenly Father is my brother, and sister, and mother.” (v.50).

So the question then is, what is the will of the Father that we are to do? Well, there are many aspects of God’s will. We are to love God with our all, we are to love our neighbor as ourselves, we are to love our enemies. We are to be reconciled, we are to forgive. We are to grow in holiness and Christian perfection.

For us specifically in CFC-FFL, aside from all those, we are to accomplish what God chose us for and anointed us to do. These are basically three: (1) the work of evangelization and mission, (2) the work of family renewal, and (3) the work with the poor.

Let us do the Father’s will. And then let us hear Jesus say of us, “Here are my mother and my brothers.” (v.49b).
