Benedict XVI has approved the canonization of seven blessed. One of them is the teenager Pedro Calungsod who will be the second saint in Philippine history. He was martyred in 1672 for defending missionaries.
He was born in Molo, a Chinese district in Iloilo City. He came to Cebu to preach Christianity using the missionary text Doctrina Christiana propagated by the Dominican Order of priests then studied at the Jesuit town of Loboc in Bohol before moving to Guam.
It is known that he was a teacher of Catechism who went with Spanish Jesuit missionaries from the Philippines to evangelize the Chamorros in the Ladrones Islands in the western Pacificin 1668. He, along with his companion Diego San Vitores were hacked to death with a katana weapon on 2 April 1672 at Tomhom, Guam. His remains were later mutilated, and the bodies thrown into the sea.
