BUILT INTO A SPIRITUAL HOUSE

(Part 28)

BUILT INTO A SPIRITUAL HOUSE

May 14, 2017

Today’s reading:  1 Peter 2:4-9

Jesus, the suffering servant, is the cornerstone of the Church which he himself established. “The stone which the builders rejected has become the cornerstone” (v.7b). As we accept Jesus as our Savior and Lord, we become part of that Church. “Come to him, a living stone, …. and, like living stones, let yourselves be built into a spiritual house” (v.4a,5a). We are parts of the body of Christ, which is the Church. We are to strive to be like him, to center our lives on him, to be holy as he is holy. We are “to be a holy priesthood to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.” (v.5b). Our lives belong to God, and we are to expend our lives in His service.

As members of the Church, we are to live out our faith in Jesus. “Therefore, its value is for you who have faith” (v.7a). If we put our faith in him, then we are to obey him in everything. Otherwise we will lose our way and go astray. “They stumble by disobeying the word” (v.8b).

To be part of Christ’s Church is such a great privilege for us all. We are chosen, we share in the priesthood of Christ, we are called to be holy as he is holy, we belong to him. “But you are ‘a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people of his own’” (v.9a). Wow. How great is that?!

With all that, we must be one, as the body is one. We must be a spiritual house, nay, a spiritual powerhouse, empowered by the Spirit to do the work of a missionary Church. God brings us together and sends us forth, “so that you may announce the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.” (v.9b).
