Happy Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary!
In the Eastern Church, the dormition (“falling asleep”) of Mary began to be commemorated in the 6th century. The observance gradually spread to the West, where it became known as the feast of the Assumption. By the 13th century, most Catholic theologians accepted the belief of the Assumption. However, this doctrine did not become an article of faith until November 1, 1950, when Pope Pius XII declared it a dogma of the Catholic faith in Munificentissimus Deus:
“The Immaculate Mother of God, the ever Virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory.”
Today, we remember one of the best known of all Marian prayers, “The Memorare”. It is a section of a much longer 15th-century prayer known as the “Ad sanctitatis tuae pedes, dulcissima Virgo Maria.” As one community, we offer this beautiful prayer to ask Mama Mary for assistance in our work to renew the family and defend the cause of life.
As we celebrate this beautiful Marian feast day of the Assumption of our Lady, we remind you of the upcoming event “Iba’t Ibang Mukha Ni Maria”. This gathering of CFC FFL women and their friends will be on September 8, 2012, in celebration of the birthday of our Blessed Mother.
