FROM THE SERVANT GENERAL
ON POPE FRANCIS
CHARITY AND SPIRITUALITY
May 28, 2016
The pope affirms our direction of work with the poor being part of evangelization, of charity being steeped in spirituality, both for those serving and the poor being served. To serve the poor is the mission of Jesus and of his Church. As such, it is spiritual work, sustained by prayer and spiritual formation.
Our former work with the poor, Gawad Kalinga (GK), veered away, eschewing prayer and overt manifestations of Christian faith. GK has ended up as just an NGO.
Charitable work must be supported by prayer, Pope tells Don Orione congregation

“Your service to the Church will be more effective the more you apply yourselves to care for your personal closeness to Christ and to your spiritual formation,” Pope Francis said in a May 27 audience with members of the Congregation of Don Orione, who were gathered in Rome for their general chapter.
The Pontiff encouraged his audience to imitate the example of St. Luigi Orione, combining charitable work with spiritual growth. He advised them to “always keep watch to ensure faith does not become ideology, charity is not reduced to philanthropy, and the Church does not end up as an NGO.”
