Today’s gospel:  Matthew 2:13-18

The culture of death has always been in the world. From the time Cain killed Abel. To the time Pharaoh ordered the new-born males of the Jews killed. To the time of Herod. “He ordered the massacre of all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity two years old and under” (v.16b).

The culture of death includes abortion, which is the killing of the unborn in the womb of the mother. Abortion, when it was first allowed, started with exceptions, such as in cases of rape and incest. Then it was permitted up to the first trimester, then the second trimester, then the third trimester. And today for any reason whatsoever. This is what we call the slippery slope of the culture of death.

But why is abortion promoted? This has to do with depopulationists, who claim that there are just too many people in the world. They would like to cut down the world’s population to just 500 million (from about 7.5 billion currently). That necessitates a lot of deaths, and not just from abortion. And so abortifacient contraceptives are promoted. And so wars are fomented. And so cures for deadly diseases are not that aggressively pursued (consider also the greed of multinational pharmaceuticals). And so HIV/AIDS is allowed to spiral. And of course there is euthanasia (ironically called “mercy killing”). Kill the unborn, and also kill the aged and sick and those of no use to society (so they say).

Now the anti-life forces have brought abortion and euthanasia together and come up with child euthanasia. Why just settle for aborting a baby up to nine months in the womb? Why not when the baby is already born? Again the excuses are given, mainly for children who are born with significant birth defects. Remember the slippery slope? It will not stop there. From birth defects it moves to grave illness and then to no reason at all. Certain bioethicists have already argued that killing a newborn should be permissible in all the cases where abortion is, including cases where the newborn is not disabled. Further, from right after birth, it will move to up to two years, then up to twelve years (the full lifetime as a child).

Herod wanted to kill the Christ child. “Herod is going to search for the child to destroy him.” (v.13c). Satan, the dragon, wanted to kill the Christ child (see Rev 12:4b). When the dragon failed, it went off to wage war against the rest of Mary’s offspring (see Rev 12:17).  In this the devil has been hugely successful. To date there have been hundreds of millions of abortions. Abortion is Satan’s action against God and against God’s children. It is diabolical. All who approve of or do abortions are doing the work of the devil.

Abortion started with being illegal throughout the world. Now it is not only legal, but is permitted anytime before birth, and now also after birth. This is the devil’s assault against God.

Our mission in CFC-FFL is to defend life. Let us be about that work.
