(Part 88)

Ascension Sunday

May 28, 2017

Today’s readings:

Acts 1:1-11

Psalm 47:2-9

Ephesians 1:17-23

Matthew 28:16-20

God sent His own Son Jesus into the world to win for us our salvation. Then God established His Church. God “put all things beneath his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church, which is his body” (Eph 1:22-23a). We are all members of the body of Christ on earth.

As the Church, we have a task to do. Jesus commissioned the disciples and sent them forth. “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations” (Mt 28:19a). They are to work such that the salvation won by Jesus would be experienced by all in the world. Our task is to witness to Jesus’ saving deed. In this, we are able to be effective witnesses for the work of worldwide evangelization through empowerment by the Holy Spirit. “But you will receive power when the holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, throughout Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” (Acts 1:8). He sent the Holy Spirit and empowered his people as they “were baptized with the holy Spirit.” (Acts 1:5b).

Jesus has ascended into heaven, as “he was lifted up, and a cloud took him from their sight.” (Acts 1:9b). Jesus will return. In the meantime, we are to continue with the work of evangelization. We are to help restore God’s dominion over His own creation. “For God is king over all the earth; God rules over the nations” (Ps 47:8a,9a).

What will we have to show when Jesus does come? The work is urgent. There is no time to lose. “Men of Galilee, why are you standing there looking at the sky? (Acts 1:11a). Be informed and aware. Know that our Lord and King will return. “This Jesus who has been taken up from you into heaven will return in the same way as you have seen him going into heaven.” (Acts 1:11b).

In the meantime, get to work.
