OUR THEME FOR 2017
DOING GOD’S WILL
January 24, 2017
Today’s gospel: Mark 3:31-35
Being one in Christ is being his brother, part of the one family of God, of the one body of Christ. And how does one become a part of God’s family, being a brother of Jesus? As Jesus himself says, “whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother.” (v.35).
To be one in Christ is to do the will of God. It is not just being born into God’s family through baptism. Even infants who are baptized depend on their godparents to affirm their rejection of Satan and acceptance of Christ. Later on when they become adults, many renege on their affirmations. What ultimately makes one a brother or sister of Jesus is obedience to his commands, a living out of the fullness of life in him.
Thus, being one in Christ cannot happen apart from starting to live a righteous life and striving for holiness. Much more can it not happen if one is into works of the flesh, such as gossip, lying, maligning, envy, rivalry, dissensions, factions. Works of the flesh make one a child of the evil one, and so not a part of the family of God.
As Christians we pray to God our Father and to Jesus our brother. We call on them. We pray, “our Father in heaven.” May we hear our Lord say to us, “Here are my mother and my brothers.” (v.34b).
