FAR ABOVE THE HEAVENS

OUR THEME FOR 2018

(Part 11)

FAR ABOVE THE HEAVENS

September 21, 2017

Today’s readings:

Ephesians 4:1-13

Psalm 19:2-5

God is great and awesome indeed. Just look at the heavens (and the universe that our eyes cannot see) created by God. “The heavens declare the glory of God” (Ps 19:2a). And Jesus ascended into heaven, nay, “far above all the heavens” (Eph 4:10b). Jesus is the great King of the universe. And we are to be like him! God intends for us to “all attain to the unity of faith and knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the extent of the full stature of Christ” (Eph 4:13). Is that not being destined for greatness?

Now it is not just about our ultimate destination, but about our present journey. Jesus intends for us to continue with his great work of salvation. As such he equips us. “And he gave some as apostles, others as prophets, others as evangelists, others as pastors and teachers, to equip the holy ones for the work of ministry” (Eph 4:11-12a). These are the very works of Jesus himself. In CFC-FFL, being an evangelistic and missionary community, we are all apostles (those sent on mission), prophets (those who speak in God’s name), evangelists (those who witness to Christ in proclaiming the gospel), pastors and teachers (those who care for and help form God’s people). What great work this is! We are holy warriors!

You need to know who you are and what you are called to do. Otherwise you will miss out on your destiny. You have been called, chosen, appointed, equipped. You then are “to live in a manner worthy of the call you have received” (Eph 4:1b). You are destined for greatness, but you live that call “with all humility and gentleness” (Eph 4:2a).
