FROM THE SERVANT GENERAL
THE WAY FORWARD IN CHRIST
GOD’S WILL BE DONE

Today’s gospel: Matthew 18:1-14
We always pray the Lord’s prayer, whether in private prayer, in community worship, with the rosary, in the Eucharistic celebration. Part of that prayer says, “Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” What is the Father’s will? Well, “it is not the will of your heavenly Father that one of these little ones be lost.” (v.14).
The Father precisely sent His very own Son Jesus to suffer and die for us so that everyone might be saved. His joy is when a lost sheep is found and brought back to the sheepfold. “And if he finds it, amen, I say to you, he rejoices more over it than over the ninety-nine that did not stray.” (v.13).
Now here is the tragic reality. The lost sheep is not one of the 100 but 99 of the 100! The Father grieves! And this tragic situation is all our fault, that is, the fault of God’s people who are supposed to evangelize and help bring back the lost sheep, but who largely do not do so.
Did not Jesus commission us this task? Are we not to stand in the place of Jesus and continue with his work of salvation? If Jesus were around, what would he do? “What is your opinion? If a man has a hundred sheep and one of them goes astray, will he not leave the ninety-nine in the hills and go in search of the stray?” (v.12). Jesus certainly would do so. But he has entrusted us with this task.
We must share Christ. And do this with great urgency.
