OUR THEME FOR 2018
GREATNESS AND LOWLINESS
February 12, 2018
Today’s reading: James 1:1-11
James says, “The brother in lowly circumstances should take pride in his high standing, and the rich one in his lowliness, for he will pass away ‘like the flower of the field.’” (v.9). While James is talking about people in opposite circumstances, that is, the materially poor and rich, let us look at this passage as God’s intended destiny for each of us, where greatness and lowliness come together as one.
No matter how our circumstances in life are with regards to money, power or position, we are all children of God, redeemed by Jesus, empowered by the Holy Spirit. In that is our dignity and identity. That is our high standing, to which we strive to attain to. We are destined for greatness.
But we also should know that greatness is in Christ. It is God who is great, and it is only by the grace of God and the strength of the Spirit that we can be great as well, as God intends. Apart from God we can do nothing, but with God nothing is impossible. Realizing that truth, we must bow down in worship before God, acknowledge His total dominion over us, and humbly look only to Him for what we are able to do. Our lowliness enables God to lift us high and exalt us.
Our destiny is in Christ, as we attain to greatness in our lowliness.
