OUR THEME FOR 2018
IN THE HOUSEHOLD OF GOD
September 20, 2017
1 Timothy 3:14-16
We are destined for greatness because of our great God, who is Father to children who should be like Him, who are called to be holy like He is, who are called to be perfect as He is, who are destined to live with Him in perfection in heaven. We are part of “the household of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of truth.” (1 Tm 3:15b). “Undeniably great is the mystery of devotion” (1 Tm 3:16a), of which we are partakers.
Our God is a God of miracles. “Great are the works of the Lord, … majestic and glorious is his work” (Ps 111:2a,3a). He has made His people Israel beneficiaries of His works, enabling His people to take the land, as “He showed his powerful deeds to his people, giving them the inheritance of the nations.” (Ps 111:6).
We today follow the Lord Jesus, “who was manifested in the flesh, vindicated in the spirit, seen by angels, proclaimed to the Gentiles, believed in throughout the world, taken up in glory.” (1 Tim 3:16b). And we His people are destined to carry on God’s great work, doing what Jesus did in healing and driving out demons with signs and wonders.
Now there is a “downside,” which, in spiritual terms, is actually an upside. Like Jesus, his people can expect to be opposed and oppressed. Of John the Baptist people said, “Hs is possessed by a demon.” (Lk 7:33b). Of Jesus they said, “Look, he is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.” (Lk 7:34b). Ultimate greatness for Jesus was manifested on the cross. We are called to embrace our cross as well.
Consider who you are, what you are called to. Consider the great work you are to do. Then act accordingly, in humility, knowing you are destined for greatness. “You should know how to behave in the household of God” (1 Tm 3:15a).
