Today’s readings:

1 John 2:18-21

Psalm 96:1-13

John 1:1-18

It is the end of the year 2016. “It is the last hour” (1 Jn 2:18a). we are also in the end times. The end will see the coming of the antichrist. Now is the build-up to that, so “just as you heard that the antichrist was coming, so now many antichrists have appeared.” (1 Jn 2:18b). We have a proliferation of false prophets, of cults, of demonic associations, of modernist forces, and the like. “Thus we know this is the last hour.” (1 Jn 2:18c).

Among the forces of the antichrist are those so-called Christians who have turned away from God, many of whom are even actively against Him. There are those Catholics who are lapsed, nominal, and even the enemy within. “They went out from us, but they were not really of our number; if they had been, they would have remained with us. Their desertion shows that none of them was of our number.” (1 Jn 2:19).

We are not among those. Rather, we are among those who have met Christ and are striving to truly live Christ in the anointing of the Spirit. “But you have the anointing that comes from the holy one, and you all have knowledge.” (1 Jn 2:20). We know Christ and his ways as told us in the Bible. We are God’s children. “But to those who did accept him he gave power to become children of God, to those who believe in his name” (Jn 1:12).

If we have met Christ and are living Christ, then we also share Christ. We strive to “proclaim his salvation day after day.” (Ps 96:2b). We do a worldwide work of evangelization and mission. “Tell his glory among the nations; among all peoples, his marvelous deeds.” (Ps 96:3). Our goal is for all to accept Jesus as Savior and Lord. We are to “declare among the nations: The Lord is king.” (Ps 96:10a).

This is how we counter the work of the antichrists. This is how we prepare for the return of the Lord in glory. This is how darkness will be dispelled by the light, by Jesus, as “the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” (Jn 1:5). This is how we reject all the gods of this age, as we look to the coming of the Almighty King. “For great is the Lord and highly to be praised, to be feared above all gods.” (Ps 96:4). This is how we expose the uselessness of worldly gods, and show that there is just one Almighty God, “for the gods of the nations are idols, but the Lord made the heavens.” (Ps 96:5). Indeed, “all things came to be through him, and without him nothing came to be.” (Jn 1:3a).

We are in the end times. That is not a negative but a positive. Let us be about our work, with great urgency. Let us “testify to the light, so that all might believe through him.” (Jn 1:7b). Then we can look forward with hope and joy at the return of our King. “Let the heavens be glad and the earth rejoice; …. before the Lord who comes, who comes to govern the earth, to govern the world with justice and the peoples with faithfulness.” (Ps 96:11a,13).
