Jesus’ Way is the Way of Servant Leadership

Jesus' Way is the Way of Servant Leadership

A reflection on the Book El Camino de Santiago

For God so loved the world, that He gave us His only son that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.

This verse is one of the famous or maybe the most famous verse in the Bible. Each Catholic know that because of the great love of God The Father for all of us, He sent His Son in order for us to gain salvation or eternal life. But I realized that it is not the only reason (though it is the greatest reason) why Jesus was sent here on earth. I realized that Jesus was sent here also to show us what it means to be a servant and in the same way to be a leader. In short, He was sent by God The Father also to be a role model for us on how to be a servant leader.

God is calling all of us to serve one another and to love one another. But He also calls hand-picked people to be a servant leaders. Someone who will lead and in the same way, serve His people just like what Jesus did in His time here on earth.

It is a great privilege to be a servant leader because God will entrust you His work and His people even if He knows that we may fail Him. Those failures will be the effect of not being constantly and intimately connected to God. It is important for a servant leader to have a personal relationship with God so that we may not be dishearten or discourage when we encounter difficulties, trials and hardships in serving and leading His people like being judged, and persecuted by others most especially of the people whom you are serving even if you’re doing good things for them. We will also encounter a lot of oppression and spiritual desolation from the devil for they know that they need to stop a servant leader in doing and continuing his work in proclaiming the good news of the Lord and bringing souls to heaven. That’s why we need to fix our eyes on Jesus. We always look at Him as our model on being a servant leader.

As we continue the work of the Lord that He started 2,000 years ago, let’s focus more on Him, then for others then the last is ourselves. For me that’s the way of being a servant leader, we focus first on God who called us, then we focus to others who are the reason that’s why we are called to be a servant leader then we think lastly of ourselves. This is the way to go be an effective and the best servant leader that we can be because this is the way of the Lord.

God the Father sent His son Jesus for us to see on how to serve His people and in the same way to lead them to His beautiful plan for them. God also sent Jesus for us to see the difficulties, hardship and trials that we may encounter as we respond to His calling for us to be a servant leader. Let’s just always remember on how Jesus lives His life here on earth and how He handled and overcomes all the oppression, persecutions and hardships that He encounter even up to death on the cross. May we always say yes to His call for us most especially in hard times so that we may have the share of His sufferings and sacrifices that He has done for us. Live and die as a servant leader for Him for it is the least that we can do and give back for the unconditional and relentless love that He has given to us. Amen.
