NEW YEAR MESSAGE: THE WORD AND THE SWORD

FROM THE SERVANT GENERAL

NEW YEAR MESSAGE

THE WORD AND THE SWORD

January 1, 2017

It is the start of another new year. Another opportunity. Another challenge. Another year of serving the Lord and experiencing His bountiful blessings upon our lives. We must be profoundly grateful, no matter the difficult circumstances we are facing in life. In the Lord there is always hope. In the Lord there will always be blessings.

The past year has been difficult. The world experienced the usual turmoils, and more. Life has been hard, and community life has been challenging. We can expect more of the same, for we live in a troubled world full of troubled people. But where is the hand of a good and loving God? We know the answer. It is we who have been unfaithful. Infidelity always brings its woes.

A new year brings forth resolutions to change for the better. Let us so resolve. To fight the demons within us and truly strive to be holy. To keep from becoming the enemy within. To pray without ceasing. To serve the Lord, this time with greater humility, self-denial and dogged endurance. To praise and thank the Lord always and for everything.

The star shone brightly at the birth of Jesus. Jesus himself is the light of the world. And astonishingly, Jesus tells us, you are the light of the world. We bring the light of Christ into a darkened world. This is our mission. This is our life. This is our commitment.

I have a motto for you as we start the year: “the word and the sword!” Live the word and wield the sword.

Live the word. Resolve to read, meditate on and study the Bible, the very word of God. You cannot live Christ if you do not know his prescriptions for such living. Obey God’s word. And of course Jesus is the Word made flesh. Obey him as your Lord and Master. This is your way to holiness and fruitfulness.

Wield the sword. We are an evangelistic and missionary community. When we do our work, we engage in spiritual warfare. We assault the darkness. We need to be equipped, with the armor of God and spiritual weapons of righteousness. We need to be empowered by the Spirit. We need to be zealous for the proclamation of the gospel of salvation in Jesus.

Our work is all about salvation–our own and that of many others. Go and do the work. “And take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.” (Eph 6:17). The word and the sword!

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL.
