(Part 16)

Today’s readings:

1 John 1:5-2:2

Psalm 124:2-8

Matthew 2:13-18

Abortion is rampant in the world. Hundreds of millions of unborn children have been massacred in the womb just in China alone. Abortion is legal in most countries in the world. In these nations abortion can be had at any time. Today they are even killing those who survive abortion. We have the Herods of today, heads of powerful governments like Obama of the USA.

It had happened in the time of Jesus. “He ordered the massacre of all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity two years old and under” (Mt 2:16b). In China it is more the massacre of the girls. In the world it is the killing of the unborn innocent child. Today that diabolical act is not just in Bethlehem but in every part of the world. This is the work of depopulationists and radical LGBT ideologues. The Herods of today are “going to search for the child to destroy him.” (Mt 2:13c).

Now there are those of us who oppose abortion and try to defend life. Well, the diabolical forces of the enemy also assault us. They accuse us of depriving women of their rights (how about depriving the child of his/her right to live?). They pass laws to prevent Christians from ministering to those who are considering abortion. They imprison those who peacefully pray around abortion clinics. Those who picket against abortion have been physically assaulted. There are those who have declared open season on pro-lifers. “They they would have swallowed us alive, for their fury blazed against us.” (Ps 124:3).

Today pro-lifers face truly powerful anti-life opponents. They are powerful governments like the USA, the European Union, elements in the United Nations, billionaire philanthropists, international liberal media. They have all the resources and the accompanying political and military might. We face a classic David-and-Goliath fight. But we have our God. “Our help is in the name of the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth.” (Ps 124:8). Jesus our Savior is God-with-us. The Holy Spirit strengthens and helps us to persevere. “Blessed is the Lord, who did not leave us to be torn by their teeth.” (Ps 124:6).

We are in a classic life-and-death struggle. We are is a classic light-versus-darkness situation. It is a fight between the culture of life and the culture of death. We know where we stand. We know what is right, no matter what the secular culture says and how it tries to brainwash us. “Now this is the message that we have heard from him and proclaim to you: God is light, and in him there is no darkness at all.” (1 Jn 1:5).

Rise and defend life!
