OUR THEME FOR 2013
DOING GREATER WORKS
January 25, 2013
Today’s gospel: Mark 16:15-18
Jesus said that those who believe in him will do the works that he did and even greater works (Jn 14:12). Then before his ascension, he commissioned the apostles, “Go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every creature.” (Mk 16:15). Then he said that those who believed would perform signs and wonders (Mk 16:17a). Here we see the greater works a commissioned disciple can accomplish.
* Jesus went into all of Galilee, but we are to go into the whole world.
* Jesus proclaimed the gospel to thousands of people, but we are to proclaim it to all people.
* Jesus spoke Aramaic, while we are to “speak new languages” (Mk 16:17c).
* Jesus drove out demons and healed the sick, while we are also to do those, as well as pick up serpents and not be harmed if we drink any deadly thing (Mk 16:18).
The work of evangelization is crucial, because it is all about salvation. “Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved; whoever does not believe will be condemned.” (Mk 16:16).
This Year is the Year of Faith. God’s grace will be abundant for the effective proclamation of the gospel. But it is not only about those who will hear the gospel and will decide whether to believe or not, thus experiencing salvation or condemnation. It is also about the evangelizers, if they will truly believe, and thus do greater works than Jesus.
