DOING THE WORK OF GOD

April 15, 2013

Today’s gospel: John 6:22-29

We are God’s people. God raised us as a community in order to serve Him. We are to do His very work on earth. “What can we do to accomplish the works of God?” (Jn 6:28). Jesus himself tells us, “This is the work of God, that you believe in the one he sent.” (Jn 6:29).

We are to believe in Jesus. We are to accept him as our Savior and Lord. We are to obey him as our Master. We are to walk along his path that leads to the cross. We are to be his instruments for proclaiming the gospel. We are to BE.LI.EV.E!

*    BE a friend of Jesus. We are to meet and know Christ.

*    LIve the way of Jesus. We are to live Christ.

*    EVangelize in the name of Jesus. We are to share Christ.

The life we live and the work we do are nothing less than partaking of the divine. We are human beings but made in the image and likeness of God. We are the very brothers and sisters of the Lord Jesus. We are temples of the Holy Spirit. The work we do is the very continuation and extension of the salvific work of Jesus.

As such, we live not only for this life but we live for heaven. We are citizens of the Kingdom. We must never lose our focus. We can get so easily engrossed with our secular lives, and spend our time and resources on human pursuits. And where would that lead us? Not to heaven. Jesus then reminds us, “Do not work for food that perishes but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you.” (Jn 6:27a).

We look to Jesus. We BE.LI.EV.E! Only that way can we Enter into eternal life.
