FROM THE SERVANT GENERAL
ON EVANGELIZATION AND MISSION
OUR WORK OF EVANGELIZATION AND MISSION – 3
September 2, 2015
Today’s gospel: Luke 4:38-44
We are an evangelistic and missionary community (our 2nd Core Value). The Church of which we are a part is missionary. This is the very work of Jesus himself. “To the other towns also I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God, because for this purpose I have been sent.” (v.43).
Jesus has gone up to heaven, but the work continues. That is why he issued the Great Commission. Jesus sends us. In the work of evangelization, the very first step is the proclamation of the gospel, that of salvation in Jesus. If we are to truly follow in the footsteps of Jesus, then we must evangelize. We do this anywhere and we go everywhere, not just in our areas or parishes but “to the other towns also.”
Now this is massive work, but we must never neglect prayer. Never forget that one all-important foundation is prayer, which is about our intimate relationship with God. Jesus was very busy, ministering to people even “at sunset” (v.40a) and beyond, but he never neglected to commune with the Father. “At daybreak, Jesus left and went to a deserted place.” (v.42a). When we pray and when we evangelize, then God will use us to bring healing to people (v.38-40) and bring people out of the dominion of the evil one (v.41a).
We are called to share Christ. We do not own Jesus. We must not be selfish with Jesus, as were the townsfolk of Capernaum. “The crowds went looking for him, and when they came to him, they tried to prevent him from leaving them.” (v.42b). For us, we meet Christ, we live Christ, and we share Christ. Jesus “was preaching in the synagogues of Judea.” (v.44). Through LCSC, in pursuing the lost sheep, we proclaim Christ in the parishes of the Catholic Church.
