PRAYER FOR THE NEW EVANGELIZATION

April 29, 2015

Today’s psalm:  Psalm 67:2-8

Today’s psalm, a prayer of petition for a bountiful harvest, could as well be our prayer for the work of the New Evangelization. We do look to what Jesus has said, that the harvest is rich. “The earth has yielded its harvest; God, our God, blesses us.” (v.7). But the problem is the lack of laborers to bring in that harvest. So if the people of God present themselves as laborers and allow God to use them as instruments, which is what God desires to do, then the harvest will be reaped. Then the gospel will be preached to the ends of the earth. “May God bless us still; that the ends of the earth may revere him.” (v.8).

We are called to be evangelizers and missionaries. We are to help people to meet Christ, to live Christ and to share Christ. We are to do rapid, massive and worldwide evangelization. “So shall your way be known upon the earth, your victory among all the nations.” (v.3). What is our purpose? So that all peoples will experience the salvation already won by Jesus for them on the cross. So that they will live their lives in worship of Him who is Lord and King. “May the peoples praise you, God; may all the peoples praise you!” (v.4,6).

The world is in darkness and turmoil. People desperately search for peace. But true peace can never come unless the nations turn to God. Only when the world accepts the lordship of Jesus can there be peace on earth. “May the nations be glad and rejoice; for you judge the peoples with fairness, you guide the nations upon the earth.” (v.5).

And so this is the great work we have been given to do, the Great Commission to proclaim the gospel of salvation in Jesus. It is a privilege like no other. Jesus is the only way to salvation. Jesus is the only way to peace in the world. It is our privilege, and our responsibility, to present him to the whole world. For this we need God’s blessing, we need the grace of Jesus, we need empowerment from the Holy Spirit. The good news for us is that when God calls and commissions, He also equips and provides for what is needed. We just need to step forward. “May God be gracious to us and bless us; may his face shine upon us.” (v.2). That will certainly be an answered prayer.
