STANDING IN FOR GOD
October 6, 2017
Today’s gospel: Luke 10:13-16
We have been seeing that greatness comes with doing the very work of God, who is great and whose work is great. We are God’s workers. We are His representatives. We are his ambassadors. We do His work. Now that is pretty impressive by itself.
But the connection is much more profound. We stand in the very place of God! Jesus avers this startling reality: “Whoever listens to you listens to me. Whoever rejects you rejects me.” (v.16a). Wow! Awesome! The very spiritual well-being, the very salvation of people, has become dependent upon whether they accept our testimony or reject what we have to say about Jesus. Jesus has totally entrusted the continuation of his work, involving salvation, to us!
But there is more! It gets much more profound. Jesus says, “And whoever rejects me rejects the one who sent me.” (v.16b). People who reject us reject Jesus and reject God the Father Himself! Why is that so? Well, because the Father sent the Son, and Jesus sends us. If an authentic messenger is rejected, the sender is in effect rejected, all the way up the line, to the Sender of the sender. Wow!
It must be clear to us that we have a great responsibility, having been given a great privilege to do a great task. This is not to be taken lightly. We need to be authentic disciples who are able to authentically speak for Jesus. That is not easy, as the task itself is not easy.
But such are the realities. Jesus says so himself. This is why if we respond in fullness of commitment, purity and humility, we are destined for greatness.
