FROM THE SERVANT GENERAL
OUR THEME FOR 2017
THE HOUSEHOLD OF GOD
October 28, 2016
Today’s reading: Ephesians 2:19-22
It is amazing when we realize the reality of our being one body in Christ. We are one because we are in Christ. “Through him the whole structure is held together” (v.21a). And because we are in him who is holy, then we too enter into that holiness, and the body “grows into a temple sacred in the Lord” (v.21b). Our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit. We are being built up as one to be the home of the Trinity, as “in (Jesus) you also are being built together into a dwelling place of God in the Spirit.” (v.22).
In Christ we are brought together as one. This is an amazing development. Apart from him we go our own way and wander aimlessly in the world. Now we are gathered together as God’s family and we become citizens of the Kingdom. “So then you are no longer strangers and sojourners, but you are fellow citizens with the holy ones and members of the household of God” (v.19).
And what a family lineage we have. The household of God is “built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets” (v.20a). Those are Peter and Paul and Isaiah and Jeremiah. And at the center of it all is “Christ Jesus himself as the capstone.” (v.20b).
Such is the one body of which we are a part, and the unity which we must preserve. We no longer go our own way or wander aimlessly in the world, but we grow together into a temple that is holy. And in this way, God intends for us to carry on with the work of the prophets and apostles, being prophetic witnesses in the world today and being sent out to proclaim the gospel of Jesus the Savior.
